The Visual Display Board

A major discovery was made during a review of the research material. when it was realized that the Key for Identifying Hexagrams, incorporated within the I Ching book, could actually represent a visual display board. This Key formed by an eight by eight matrix. It is used by practitioners of the I Ching, to determine individual hexagrams from their respective upper and lower trigram components.

Identification :

Each square is identified by a number from one to sixty-four in what appears to be a random arrangement.  These numbers are used by practitioners to identify a specific divinatory hexagram reading which has been determined by using one of the oracle methods.

The matrix arrangement consists of eight columns and rows, which are individually identified by one of the eight different trigram symbols.

The sequential arrangement of trigrams placed horizontally along the top of the matrix (from the 1st left hand column to the 8th column on the right) is the same as the trigram sequence that is placed vertically (from the 1st row at the top to the 8th row at the bottom) along the left hand side of the matrix.

It should be noted, that this specific arrangement of hexagram numbers which has mystified scholars and philosophers for many centuries, has now been mathematically deciphered.

The presentation of hexagrams on this type of matrix board has been used for divination purposes for over four thousand years. Yet quite incredulously no one, as far as I am aware, has given much thought to its real purpose and use or even asked the simple question - Why are “random numbers” exclusively used to identify the hexagram positions?

Hexagram Pixels :

It can be seen, that each hexagram has been given a unique identification number.  This, in my expressed opinion, could be utilized to represent the address of an individual screen “pixel”.  By employing this board as a visual display unit, each “pixel” in the form of a single hexagram “square” could be placed within any one of the sixty-four squares, by using either the hexagram identification number or the position of the two associated trigrams.

This simple methodology could have enabled the ancient practitioners of the I Ching to create pictographic patterns by utilizing a number of hexagram symbols or their respective trigram components.

Trial Experiment & Mathematical Exercise :

A trial experiment and mathematical exercise was conducted with the thirteen anomalous hexagrams, mentioned previously, which were placed on a blank display matrix board in their respective positions. Amazingly, the position of all thirteen hexagrams formed a symmetrical pattern either side of an imaginary straight diagonal line, drawn from the top left hand corner to the bottom right hand corner of the board.  This arrangement was not coincidental!  It was a deliberate design which had been pre-planned by the originators of the I Ching to convey something of importance to the initiates.  How exciting it is when one finds something that may have been mislaid or lost for centuries – This pattern represented an enigma.

The Hidden Design :

Looking more closely at the positional arrangement created by the thirteen hexagrams, I became aware of something hidden in the pattern formed on the board.  I started to draw lines between each specific square.  To my astonishment they revealed a geometrical design, which was a right angled triangle with side squares.

The design of this triangle and the associated squares represents the geometrical proposition of Pythagora:

Quote, "The square of the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle is

equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides". unquote.

As a result of this discovery, I thought that there could be additional geometrical and mathematical information hidden within this pattern.  Further lines were drawn between various points and by trial and error a unique pentagonal shape was revealed.  This caused quite a sensation and raised more questions than answers.  For instance, why would the originators go to so much trouble in designing an encrypted coded system, to simply produce just a few geometrical images such as the pentagon?

The Pentagon :

This five sided pentagon represents a mystical symbol and is directly linked to a pentagram, which in the western world represents the the “five limbed” microcosm of man.  However it is said that:

Fundamental to all forms of Chinese divination is the significance of the FIVE CARDINAL POINTS (and the EIGHT DIRECTIONS).Without a thorough understanding of their symbolism it is impossible to interpret any horoscope. For this reason, the principles of the Five Cardinal Points "must precede any account" of the stars, planets or astrological techniques. The Five Cardinal points are the Four Directions (East, South, West and North) and the Centre.

Every aspect of Chinese philosophy is linked to the Five Cardinal Points and The Eight Directions viz, the five elements, the five planets, the five senses, the relationships within the family and the eight trigrams, in fact every possible classification and category.

Thus, the pentagon in some mystical way represents the Tree of Knowledge, which was hidden away from the eyes of the uninitiated.  This seemed to be a plausible answer.  But why was this pentagonal figure used?  In addition, one important question remained, as to what was the reason for hiding it?  If the knowledge the pentagon contained or the ancient message incorporated within its shape was deemed to be sacred, then it may have had some relationship to either a Chinese or a Tibetan secret astrological practice.

Measurement of Mathematical Co-ordinates & Discovery of Mathematical Constants :

For reference purposes, I decided to measure the individual mathematical co-ordinates of the pentagonal shape, utilizing the side length of one hexagram square as one unit of measurement.  What followed was truly amazing.  The measured distance between the apex point of the pentagon and both the right hand side and left hand side of the horizontal base line was found to be Two Pi units i.e., (2п units).

To obtain more information, two vertical lines were drawn from the base of the pentagon to the intercept with the roof, using the corners of the inherent hexagram pattern as a guide. An additional horizontal line was drawn across the apex from one side to the other, to form a rectangular shape inside the pentagon.  The measured ratio of the shorter to the longer side of the rectangular shape was found to be equal to that of the Golden Section Ratio. Other straight lines were drawn across the inherent hexagram pattern and the value for ‘e’- epsilon was also determined by measurement. If that was not enough, a pictographic image of an ancient sun-dial plate emerged from the depths of this unique pattern.

Hexagram Patterns :

This inherent and unique pattern of hexagrams has revealed not only the existence of the geometrical proposition of Pythagoras, but had also indicated the values of the irrational mathematical constants that govern the Mathematical Laws of the Universe, together with the means to measure Time! This in itself represents a truly magnificent technical and mathematical achievement, which had been conceived by an ancient and advanced civilization several thousand years ago. The ancient scribes, who devised this clever and yet so simple computerized system were truly remarkable, god like even!

This visual display board, together with individual and specific series of hexagrams, could form an important modern educational tool. In order to obtain additional information, the nine hundred plus hexagrams (previously mentioned), were carefully re-examined and segregated into individual groups (based on the number of times a particular hexagram was created).

Each group of hexagrams was separately displayed on the matrix board.  The patterns formed showed that a significant effort had been made by the originators of the I Ching to pass on for posterity their own thoughts, ideas and images of their civilization.

Investigation of Combinatory Methodology :

An investigation conducted on the initial combinatory methodology which created these pictographic images showed, that a considerable amount of hexagram repetition had occurred which had been not only time consuming but also unnecessary. A simpler and more accurate calculating model was therefore envisaged.  After several weeks work, together with additional research on the inherent binary code within the I Ching text, a new model hexagram calculator emerged from the design board which was developed to produce the "H" system slide rule (Refer to the Secret Computer of the Ancient Gods - Volume 1 Part 2 - Chapter 26 and Appendix 3 therein).

This new model, now rearranged as a central processing unit, can compute and select trigrams in a specific manner and is of a linear design which performs the same functions as that of the ancient cyclic sequence analogue design of the I Ching Computer System.

The Creation of a Universal Set of Numerical Hexagram :

This physical CPU is re-programmable and the series of hexagrams it creates are formed in a uniform mathematical and scientific manner, which is repeatable.  The new model calculator has led to the creation of a universal set of numerical hexagram tables, which are being used in conjunction with analytical sheets.  The methodology employed is currently being synthesized, to create a modern day software program, so that every possible pictographic image may be recovered from this unique ancient combinatory computer system. To-date a large number of trigram discs have been deciphered. The resultant pictographic images have been reviewed and their inherent meaning interpreted.

The Visual Display Board - Numerical Code Decipherment :

The random numerical hexagram arrangement on the visual matrix board was found to incorporate a numerical coded system which was thought to be chaotic and undecipherable.  However, a study of the information contained in a silk manuscript, recovered by archaeologists from the Ma-Wang-Tui tomb in China, has led to the decipherment of this numerical coded system and the mysterious encrypted code use by the originators of the I Ching. The technical details, logical operations and mathematical methodology which was incorporated within the ancient I Ching computer system is now known.

NOTE: In the 2nd part of my book I demonstrated how output data, in hexagram format, can be pictorially displayed within the respective squares of this sixty–four matrix (game / counter) board in a visual and practical manner. I also showed how the pictorial arrangement of hexagrams, created by mathematical manipulation and permutation of the basic trigram symbols, formed patterns or pictographic images. These have been interpreted by me to reveal a surprising amount of condensed mathematical and scientific knowledge.
